Standing Ovation

The Fountain Valley School District (FVSD) Festival of the Arts concluded on May 6 with the Instrumental Monster Concert. The final concert showcased third- through eighth-grade wind and percussion musicians in the Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) gym. Jon Lundgren, Lenny Graf, and Steve Hommel conducted elementary beginning and advanced bands and the FVSD Middle School Ensemble. New directors Rudy Arevalos and Robert Covacevich also directed at the middle school level. Young FVSD musicians were treated to outstanding performances by the FVHS Royal Regiment Marching Band under the direction of Mark Irons and Gary Wampler. The Fountain Valley Indoor Percussion Ensemble, led by Rick Barclay and Jack Mizutani, inspired their younger counterparts to stay in music with their national medal-winning show. At all the concerts, the Fountain Valley Educational Foundation (FVEF) was on hand to fund-raise. Opportunity baskets, food sales, and donations earned a total of $7,000.

The Teacher Tribute program is under way, raising funds for next year’s teacher grant recipients through parent donations made in the name of their favorite teachers. The teacher grant committee was able to award over $6,000 in grants to all 2011 applicants. Grants were presented by FVEF Board members to teachers in May.

Reports indicate that budget cuts to education continue to challenge the FVSD. Consider making a tax-deductible investment in your community by supporting your local schools. Please partner with FVEF as we strive to maintain quality education and help keep the FVSD the top ranked elementary school district in the county!
